Protection Of Your Gaze
Our beloved Prophet (s.a.w.) has said:
غُضُّوا اَبْصارَكُم تَرَوْنَ الْعَجائِبَ.
Lower your gaze and you will see wonders.
“According to Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood, Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w said that Allah says the gaze of your eyes is one of Iblees’s poisonous arrow. Allah also says that if a person protects his gaze because of Allah’s fear, he will reward him with a solid foundation of faith in his heart.”
Allah has ordered men and women to protect their gaze in the Holy Quran. Allah’s order says, ‘O believers, men should keep their gaze low and protect their chastity. After that, it is also ordered that women should also keep their gaze low and protect their chastity”.
Allah has blessed humans with many blessings and eyes are one of the greatest blessings of Allah. We humans have got these eyes without having to ask for them, without making any effort or spending any money. Those who are deprived of this blessing only know the actual worth of it.
In today’s world with many scientific developments, scientists have called the human eye a complete universe on its own. A person’s ability to see is a very important attribute for him. Allah who is the creator of this eye, has prescribed us the correct way to use it because only the creator knows the best use of his creature.
Allah has taught us the best way to use our eyes and we should follow the way prescribed to us. The correct way to use them is described in the Holy Quran. According to a hadith, Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w said that if we use our eyes to look at our parents with love and kindness, our reward will be equivalent to a hajj and umrah.
- Always remember the world is the Kingdom of God that He reigns and oversees. The holy Quran says:
وَقُلِ اعمَلوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُم وَرَسولُهُ وَالمُؤمِنونَ
And say, ‘Go on working: Allah will see your conduct, and His Apostle and the faithful [as well]
When we start using our eyes according to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, they become a source of reward for us. If a person starts using their eyes in the wrong way, his brain also starts conceiving the wrong ideas, the brain becomes weak which leads to poor memory, poor indulgence in work, less sleep, and weak willpower. All these are the drawbacks of using your eyes against the teachings of Allah.
Once Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w was talking to sahaba about the correct usage of our eyes. He asked the sahaba to avoid sitting in the way of the street. If someone is obliged to sit in the way then he should keep his gaze low, not disturb anyone, respond to the Salam of others, and spread goodness.
Once a sahabi asked what if we see something prohibited by mistake, Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w said: “Turn away your eyes”. Surah Bani Israel says:
“No doubt, every human being will be answerable for the deeds of his heart and eyes”.
Humans think it is very difficult to protect your gaze but if we start following the teachings of Allah, it is a very easy and beautiful deed. If a person wants to live a peaceful life with clean thoughts, and a healthy life then he should protect his gaze. He should keep in mind the benefits and drawbacks of protecting his gaze, study the Quran every day, and keep the environment of his house pure and clean from all sorts of evil. By following all these practices, it will become very easy to protect his gaze and follow the teachings of Islam. May Allah guide us on the right path and protect our gazes.
